Open BIM-based code checking automatically determines whether building permit regulations are met, requiring the input of various property information during the BIM model production process. Among these inputs, the main structural members rely on user-added property information due to vague legal definitions. However, because these members are closely related to evacuation laws, a dichotomous check based on manual input information has limitations in securing reliable results. Therefore, this study proposes an algorithm to determine major structural members without manual input of property information. The algorithm clarifies the definitions of columns, walls, slabs, and beams based on the Building Structure Standard Rules and the National Construction Standards Glossary, identifying the basic conditions to be met. It also analyzes IFC format data to derive the property information that affects the identification of major structural members. Test BIM models are created and reviewed to evaluate the accuracy of the algorithm. This advancement reduces the amount of work associated with manual input and improves the reliability of code-checking results.
